Case Study: Colon Care, Umhlanga Rocks - Successfully Overcoming Complicated Drainage Problems with the Innovative SANICUBIC 1 System
News 03/26/2025
Project: Refurbishment of a retail unit for use as a colonic treatment centre, Umhlanga Rocks, South Africa.
Challenge
A shop unit that is situated in a busy shopping centre and is currently undergoing a complete, extensive refurbishment with the aim of transforming the unit into a specialist colonic treatment centre has posed a major and outstanding issue related to drainage systems. Although the unit holds a very suitable location in close proximity to public toilets for the shopping centre, linking the toilet, basins, and treatment machines of the new centre to the existing old sewer pipe has been absolutely impossible due to:
· The absence of gravity here was such that what we had was a scenario in which there was no feasible route that would sustain a traditional gravity-fed drain system.
· Obstructions and Layout: The presence of pre-existing obstructions, coupled with the specific layout of the unit under consideration, made it impossible to achieve a direct connection to the sewer system by normal means typically employed for that purpose.
Solution:
SFA South Africa came up with a thoughtful response by recommending the SANICUBIC 1 lifting station. This innovative and state-of-the-art system resolved the complex and multi-faceted drainage requirement that was necessary:
· SANICUBIC 1 Installation: A SANICUBIC 1 lifting station was installed unobtrusively and carefully beneath a basin that is located within one of the treatment rooms so that it could not be seen but still be able to carry out its important function.
· Gravity-Fed Input: All wastewater and sewage from the treatment centre are directed to flow into the SANICUBIC 1 through a standard process known as gravity fall.
· Grinding and Pumping: The SANICUBIC 1 also has a very effective and powerful grinding blade that efficiently grinds all the solids it encounters into a finely processed effluent slurry. The resulting slurry is then pumped upwards, reaching high levels up to the ceiling.
· High-Level Discharge: The waste is discharged through a 50mm diameter PVC pipe that is ceiling-mounted to allow efficient transportation to a suitable connection point where it can be efficiently handled.
· Sewer Connection: The outlet pipe of the lifting station is connected to an existing 110mm sewer pipe, utilizing the force of gravity to dispose of the waste effectively and efficiently.
Advantages:
Effectively Overcome Complex Drainage Challenges: The SANICUBIC 1 effectively overcame the complex and challenging drainage configuration that posed a serious challenge, especially due to a lack of natural gravity fall within the system.
· Space-Saving Solution: Due to its space-saving dimensions, the SANICUBIC 1 was fitted easily in the treatment room. Reliable and Consistent Performance: The very efficient grinder and pump operated in perfect harmony to provide an effective and reliable means of wastewater disposal.
· Minimised Disruption: The high-level discharge reduced disruption to the operations of the centre. Conclusion: The SANICUBIC 1 lifting station presented a highly effective and remarkably practical solution for managing the intense and often complicated drainage requirements that were instrumental in the successful operation of the Colon Care treatment facility. This in-depth case study amply demonstrates the remarkable versatility and unwavering reliability of Saniflo solutions for successfully addressing the wide range of complex plumbing problems commonly encountered in most commercial settings.
